What is Coaching?

In its most basic sense, the aim of coaching is to improve the performance of an individual in an aspect wherein there is a need for improvement. It is one of the several types of support that is intended to help an individual reach his or her maximum potential or to overcome problems and challenges in life.

Although the purpose may sound similar as to those of consulting, counseling and mentoring, the method and focus of coaching couldn’t be more different. Coaching is more personality oriented compared to all of the other styles of support. For this style of support to work, there is a need to know about the individual’s strengths and weaknesses as well as the overall behavior.

The role of a coach is to observe and evaluate how an individual deals with the problem or how he or she goes with a specific aspect of his or her life. After that a coach must then facilitate a learning process wherein the individual can acquire the knowledge and skills needed to improve in that aspect. Several options might be presented to deal with the hurdle, but the power to make a choice will rest solely on the individual so that he or she can make a decision wherein he or she is most comfortable with.
